Unit 5 Subtle mind

Hello all!! This week we are supposed to "Compare and contrast the Loving Kindness exercise and the Subtle mind exercise. Explain your experience including the benefits, frustrations etc." I am going to have a hard time doing this, because I was not able to get into the exercise this week at all and could not even make it through the first few minutes.  I moved this past week, had a huge rummage on Saturday, and am trying to get my rental house cleaned up by this Wednesday. Combine that with work, not being able to even find the toothpaste ( had to go buy a tube!!) and you will understand why I am totally unable to relax! It has been hectic week.

The second part of the assignment was to, "Discuss the connection of the spiritual wellness to mental and physical wellness. Explain how the connection is manifested in your personal life."  I am a walking example of this right now.  If one is off balance the rest will become off balance.  My mental health has been severely challenged this week. As a result from all the mental stress, I am not sleeping well which will lead to getting headaches. Of course the stress causes me to feel like I can't get anything done in a timely manner.  I am hoping that getting boxes unpacked this weekend will greatly reduce my stress, which in turn I will get better sleep and this will help be feel better and have a more positive attitude!

  1. Hi Christine,

I haven’t moved in over nineteen years but I can still empathize with how taxing it can be. I hope that you can find the time once you get settled into your new place, to listen to and participate in the exercise. Just this very morning I carved out twenty minutes to do the exercise for the second time this week.

If I may share – the narrator is empathic about the relation between the breathing and the mind, still the breath and you will still the mind. The practice began with taking 10 deep breaths, this initiates the calming process, because “the breath” is always with us, if we train our breathing to calm the mind, then we are well on our way in transforming our minds from grasping at every mental activity to a witnessing of the mind. This is an intentional act – a quiet mind is capable of accomplishing some amazing things.

Good luck with you new place,

    Kevin H.

  2. Christine,
I have moved 23 times in 22 years, so I know exactly how you feel. Moving is the absolute worst! I absolutely agree that if your spiritual, mental or physical health is not balanced, it causes your whole equilibrium into chaos. Moving can be both physically and mentally taxing, so it's no surprise that you are having a hard time. If you find that the guided meditation helps you, then definitely try and find some time to set aside and listen to them. I find that silent meditation on my own works best at really helping me to clear my head, but everybody's different!

Hopefully things start going smoothly for you! Good luck at your new place :)

  3. I have to agree with you about the stress. although, I rarely have trouble sleeping, my problem is getting up in the morning. On the weekends, I just sleep for hours on end. I know it must be the stress of the week. I did like the contrast of the two exercises. I tend to focus more on others than myself and the subtle mind let me focus just on me relaxing. Have a great week.
